Egmont Heritage Centre Museum
Visit our local Egmont museum to learn the history of the area. There are excellent displays of logging equipment, commercial fishing, native arts and an incredible window display of collectible bottles.
The newest addition to our museum is a totem pole carved by Arnie Jones, raised September 2010. Check out the Facebook page to see the pole as the carving progressed.
Much of my family history is housed in the museum as my mother, Mary (Griffith) West moved here when she was 6 with her pioneering parents, and she grew up in Egmont and lived here her entire life. If you look on the small school room desk you will see one of her prized posessions – a spelling test with a 100% grade!
When you enter the museum you will see a large mural on the wall painted by Egmonster Emily Gray – and in it you will see my “Pop” on his commercial troller the ‘Mary Ann W’ which he built right here in Egmont from lumber he cut in his own sawmill.
My brother’s, Peter and Graeme, are both represented in displays and pictures as well – it’s truly a family museum for many of the locals and we’re all very proud of our heritage.
My little blue ‘May Queen Attendant’ dress is also hanging in the museum as part of the community display, next to a photo of me wearing it. Be sure to visit the museum on a day when I’m volunteering and I’ll be happy to show you some of my favorite exhibits.
